Introduction

This planner provides a structured approach to establishing a regular tech-free period during the week. Tech-Free Tuesday is designed as a weekday implementation strategy that can realistically fit into busy family schedules, starting with small steps and gradually building toward more comprehensive tech-free time.

According to Common Sense Media research, children ages 8-18 now spend an average of 7+ hours per day on entertainment screen media, making intentional tech breaks increasingly important for balanced development.

Why Tuesday?

Tuesday offers several advantages for a tech-free day:

Four-Stage Implementation Approach

This gradual approach is based on behavior change research showing that small, incremental changes are more sustainable than dramatic lifestyle shifts.

1

Tech-Free Mealtimes

Weeks 1-2

  • Start with dinner only (recommended) or your family's most consistent shared meal
  • All devices stored in a designated basket or drawer before the meal
  • Focus on conversation and connection
  • Use conversation starters provided in this planner
2

Tech-Free Evening

Weeks 3-4

  • Expand to include after-dinner hours until bedtime
  • Implement device curfew (all devices off and charging outside bedrooms)
  • Plan specific alternative activities (games, reading, walks, etc.)
  • Address homework needs by planning tech-based work for other days
3

Tech-Free Afternoon & Evening

Weeks 5-6

  • Extend tech-free time to begin after school/work
  • Prepare alternative after-school activities
  • Use transition rituals to help children shift mindsets
  • Create visual reminders and schedules
4

Full Tech-Free Tuesday

Weeks 7-8

  • Implement morning routines without technology
  • Plan school/work without digital devices where possible
  • Prepare contingency plans for essential tech needs
  • Celebrate the achievement of a full tech-free day

According to research from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, when families sit down together for meals without devices, adolescents and young adults eat more fruits and vegetables and consume fewer fast-food items.
